ABOUT THE ROLE:

OpStart is looking for a Tax Director to lead our tax services team as we grow this product offering and serve

more clients. This position will play an integral role in our client service teams with primary responsibilities for

leading the tax team, implementing tax compliance processes and tax software, and assuring complete and

accurate tax filings.

 

Specific responsibilities include:

Develop, refine and lead OpStart’s tax service offering, including contributing to strategy, pricing, and

process design.

• Lead and scale the firm’s Tax operations and processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and exceptional

service.

• Design and implement scalable processes and tools to drive efficiency and standardization across tax

compliance, reporting, and documentation workflows.

• Build and mentor a high-performing team, providing guidance, coaching, and workflow oversight to

ensure consistent service delivery and professional growth.

• Establish and maintain internal policies, controls, and templates to ensure quality, consistency, and

compliance across client engagements and filing deadlines.

• Identify, implement, and drive adoption of technology platforms to automate workflows and reduce

manual effort.

• Collaborate cross-functionally with client-facing Accounting and FP&A teams to align tax deliverables

with broader financial objectives and ensure end-to-end efficiency and risk mitigation.

• Oversee, review and when needed, prepare federal, state, and local income tax returns for C-

corporations, LLCs, and partnerships in various industries (e.g., SaaS, biotech, fintech).

• Manage and support payroll tax registration, sales/use tax implementations and filings, and other

indirect compliance filings such as 1099 and DEFT.• Oversee and assist with the analysis, preparation and filing of R&D Tax Credits.

• Develop detailed workpapers and instructions for multi-state apportionment calculations.

• Serve as an escalation point for client service needs and issues, coordinating with technical tax

professional partners as needed.

• Monitor relevant tax legislation and regulatory updates, evaluating impacts on clients and internal

processes.

• Act as a trusted advisor to internal stakeholders and clients, helping startups navigate complex tax

issues in a fast-paced, dynamic growth environment.

• Maintain strong client and internal team relationships and respond to client and internal inquiries in a

professional manner.

• Track and report on the status of returns and filings, maintaining transparency across internal and

client stakeholders.

Assist with federal and state tax audits and client due diligence processes.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensed CPA with 7+ years of experience in public accounting, with a focus on tax compliance and advisory

Demonstrative proficiency with tax compliance software, including CCH Axcess

Extensive experience preparing and reviewing federal and state income taxes for C corporations, LLCs, S

corporations and partnerships

Experience with multi-state apportionment

Familiarity with other tax compliance matters such as 1099s, franchise taxes, sales taxes, and payroll taxes

Experience supporting venture backed start-ups and understanding of their unique tax and reporting needs

Ability to remain current on IRS tax changes

Proven ability to design, implement and manage scalable processes with limited oversight

Team leadership experience, including training, workflow oversight, and performance management.

Strong analytical skills and high attention to detail and accuracy

Client first mentality and client service focus

Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to translate complex tax concepts clearly.

Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines

Desire to help others and provide extraordinary customer service

Highly organized, efficient and tech-savvy
